It was in England that the Environmental Health profession originated and this was personified by Sir Edwin Chadwick who was the founding president of the Association of Public Sanitary Inspectors. Today this organization is know as the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health.

Environmental health is basically concerned with the environment and the aspects of which are somehow related to the human health. It is a branch of the public health and environmental health provides protection against the potential effects of environmental hazards that affect human well-being and disrupt ecological balance necessary for environmental quality and life.

The World Health organization is the body that usually provides definitions regarding health and according to them environmental health can be regarded any and every aspect of the human health which is affected by environment and environmental health certainly refer to the controlling of the factors which are likely to affect health in any way.

The term “Environment” encompasses personal, occupational, global and natural environment like land, water, air, etc. The aim of environment health services is to protect and enhance environmental quality for all people.

Every kind of chemical, biological, physical and other related factors which can have an impact on the behavior of a human being ad harm his health are considered to be potentially dangerous and all of these fall under environmental health. Environmental health targets towards preventing disease and create healthy environments. This however does not include human social and cultural environment.
